Mardi 15.05.07 Adoptive Annulment
My assessments of the CM2 continue today. One kid asks what they’ll be tested in. Chinese of course. Someone says hello in Japanese and we commence with a bowing competition. I’m asked what “I wanna love you baby” and “glamorous” mean. God bless music. The later doesn’t pose any problems though I’m a little less candid with the former.
A replacement hasn’t been found for Madame Edragas this week so when I arrive this morning Odile, the secretary, is up at the blackboard with a giant chalk compass drawing spirals. Poor Odile has a headache and so I relieve her as she runs off to find something sugary.
There was no electricity yesterday and today there’s no water. Madame Pamphile’s kids cry and whine for water – they always whinge so their restlessness is finally justified!
I stay a bit longer in school again today as Elizabeth and I bitch about La Semaine des Langues. With so many holy days and other random holidays coming up it’s really not practical but we’ll muddle through somehow. Better a challenge than a walkover. There are maintenance men in the computer room so there’s hope that the computers are working. My deductions are correct. I shoot off some emails. Two mili-mates have sent mail; Oli and Lionel. Oliver was always one for keeping tabs on us whether in Martinique, St. Martin or Mars so I’m not surprised to hear from him. Lionel’s mail however is more unexpected – equally for its content and its presence. The crazy cat has taken a month’s holidays! I thought Oliver’s two week relief was excessive though it wasn’t voluntary.
Nicola’s fussing about at home. Our ‘adoptive parents’ are coming tonight and even though it’s not long after lunchtime she has already prepared the meal. I busy myself with some domestic chores before chilling for the afternoon. Chill is not the appropriate word however as it’s so, so hot today – it’s no wonder I returned home to find Nic cooking in the nip!
Marie-Louise and Christian are delighted to be with us. They’ve brought some champagne as a house-warming gift and we present them with a scrumptious dinner. Marie-Louise has to work at an ungodly hour tomorrow and Christian has to work on his golf handicap so they don’t linger long after our digestifs. Nic and I take to the terrace to earwig on our boisterous neighbours before extending the evening by finishing our finest frozen red wine!
